Our plans for 2012

Our plans for 2012 include rebuilding two elementary schools in Kibera slum, expanding the number of children fed in our school lunch programmes, helping abused mothers in Eastern Europe and providing fresh drinking water to drought-stricken regions of Africa.

ChildsLife ensures that for every $1 you give .91 goes directly to our programmes.

Chema students proudly showing their new books

ChildsLife also provided the school with some cabinets to safely store their new books.

Kenya in crisis

Children at Syatu Primary School

East Africa is facing the worst food crisis in 60 years. In the eastern provinces of Kenya people are suffering and have begun searching for water and food.  These families are rural farmers.  With the drought they not only lose their crops but also their income, so purchasing food is not an option.

Childslife has begun providing water and food to the families and students in the region of our supported schools that are also some of the most vulnerable. ChildsLife is already on the ground saving lives. Please support ChildsLife’s emergency and long term response to the current water and food crisis. Please help us help them.

First Step in Life Program

Mother with newborn child

Since 2009 ChildsLife operates the First Step in Life program in Romania. In this program ChildsLife works closely with the Romanian child protection offices and maternity wards. Women giving birth in hospital are consulted by a social worker. If there is need for support, child protection, social bureau, hospital staff and ChildsLife work together to provide the required assistance.

With this ‘early warning system’, families that are in need of social assistance can be identified and catered for on time. Each mother will receive a maternity package with baby clothes, lotion, powder and other baby necessities, courtesy of ChildsLife.

More Annenoor Centres in Romania

Children in Romania who are growing up in poverty face many challenges.  To meet their development needs and help their parents, ChildsLife is expanding the number of its Annenoor day care centres for children in Romania.

The children attending the Annenoor centres are ages 6-10 and live in difficult environments at home.  Activities at the centres are structured and safe, but also fun and encourage development. The children attending develop learn self-management and social skills. The centres are open between 12 am and 6pm each evening, and provide children with a nurturing environment. Most importantly, the children are given plenty of care and attention by our trained staff. With their children taken care of at the day centres, parents are able to work and structurally improve the economic stability of the family.

ChildsLife Vocational Centre Kibera

ChildsLife Vocational Centre

Access to a quality education is imperative for children in the Nairobi slums of Kibera. Education empowers individuals, their families and the entire community. It can be seen as an investment that provides economic, health, societal, and civic returns that will last for generations.

Without proper education, impoverished people will never have a chance to improve their own situation. ChildsLife believes that education is one of the building blocks for development. And we believe we have an important role to play in helping children acquire practical educational skills.

To meet these needs and offer hope to children and their families, ChildsLife has recently opened a vocational training centre in the Kibera slum of Kenyan capital Nairobi. ChildsLife International wants to offer an effective community-based educational program. Next to practical training the students will attend business classes and life skills lessons to build self esteem and give them a sense of pride and confidence.

ChildsLife still needs your help for the vocational centre so please donate now or contact us via info@childslife.nl for more information.

December 1 World AIDS Day

1 December, 2010   -

ChildsLife helps women become strong again

Today is World AIDS Day. On December 1 each year, World AIDS Day is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. Despite recent, improved access to antiretroviral treatment and care in many regions of the world, the AIDS epidemic still claims millions of lives each year.

That is why ChildsLife cares for those infected with HIV/AIDS. One example is our ChildsLife Home Based Care programme for (grand)mothers infected with HIV in Kenya. ChildsLife helps these women to remain strong and become independent, so they can care for their (grand)children longer. Help us in our battle for against HIV/AIDS and donate online now.

More water in Machakos

19 May, 2010   -

In 2009 ChildsLife International helped install water tanks with rain catchment systems at three schools in Machakos District in East Kenya, allowing the collection of 155,000 liters of water total. Washing basins were constructed for the students to wash their hands and collect drinking water.

The rains have started now and the tanks are currently filled to the brim with fresh water. Because of our successful cooperation with Rotary last year, ChildsLife support the installation of water tanks at three more schools Machakos District in 2010. At Kyeni primary and Kitwii primary and secondary schools hundreds of children will benefit from these projects.

Children in front of one of the schools

After visiting several primary schools in remote Machakos District in Kenya and seeing hungry children sitting at their desks, unable to concentrate to learn and play, ChildsLife decided to expand its feeding programme in Kenya. The Maasai waterpump is operational!

16 November, 2009   -

“This water pump is not a dream of only one day but is bringing renewed hope to the community.”

There was much excitement when gallons of water started gushing from the dry earth. The borehole can fulfill not only the need for clean water for the school and its students but for the entire community of about 6.000 people. Now people need to walk only 15 minutes instead of 45 minutes to get water.

Pipelines will transport the water to several collection points where water can be collected for a small fee. With this fee the running and maintenance of the pump and associated equipment can be paid, thus avoiding dependence on foreign donors for the Maasai in this region. This project has been made possible with the generous assistance and GKN U.K. through  Global Angels (U.K.).

Yearly ChildsLife – American Express Food Rally results in 3 tons food!

28 October, 2009   -

For the third consecutive year, ChildsLife organised a volunteers program for American Express employees. During a food rally held in October, teams of volunteers spent the day collecting donated food from customers at supermarkets in the region of Haarlem.

The volunteers of the international credit card company collected almost 3.000 kilograms of rice, cooking oil, canned vegetables and fruit, sugar and flower and other food items that will be sent to ChildsLife programs in Eastern Europe. In all, the volunteers collected 130 boxes of non-perishables that will be delivered to needy children and their families in Eastern Romania and Moldova. Just on time for the harsh winter period and Christmas time.

Each year, American Express workers volunteer with ChildsLife as part of the companies Good Citizenship Program, which supports organizations that cultivate meaningful opportunities for civic engagement.

ChildsLife appreciates the enthusiastic contribution of both the American Express employees and the supermarket customers!

Appeal for funds on behalf of victims Philippine floods

7 October, 2009   -

Photo AP

Residents from all over the Philippines were pleading for help as flood waters brought by typhoon Ketsana washed over their streets. The heavy rains that poured in the weekend of the 25th of September caused massive flooding. Bahay Aurora, a home for street children in Baras Rizal which received support from ChildsLife, was badly affected.

The water reached up to 2 meters in Baras Rizal. The new building of the home fortunately has two floors, so the children and their caretakers were able to climb to the second floor to escape the rising waters. Luckily all 45 young children and their caretakers are safe, but there is much flood damage to the buildings, the terrain and the furniture.

Water, food and hygiene products are currently most essential. ChildsLife therefore immediately donated 1400 euro out of the emergency fund we have exactly for these crisis situations.

Please help us assist these victims of the floods in the hard times ahead.

Helping children effectively: 2010 program reviews

12 October, 2009   -

We want to continuously support programs helping children effectively. ChildsLife reviews annually the projects it supports worldwide. After careful evaluation, we will confirm in November 2009 the programs that we will continue to fund in 2010. Where the need is great, existing programs will continue to be funded and new programs may be started. Some existing programs may be scaled down. In these difficult financial times, we closely examine community needs, cost and effectiveness to decide which programs ensure the best use of the available funds. Our plans for 2010 will be published on our website later this year.

Machakos school water project

10 September, 2009   -

Earlier this year ChildsLife International partnered with Dutch Rotary clubs Velsen, Beverwijk and Santpoort to realize a school water project in Machakos District, Kenya. Water is scarce in this region and severe drought has hit the area repeatedly.  Now, with the support of ChildsLife and Rotary, rain harvesting systems are being installed at three schools, the Kathamboni Primary School, the Kathamboni Secondary School and the Uiini Primary School. With rain gutters and water tanks, thousands of litres of water can be gathered in the rainy season. Therefore hundreds of students between 3 and 18 years old will have access to clean drinking water at school, all year round.
